Follow the Mississippi River 45 minutes downstream from Memphis’ Beale Street and you’ll find the party continues in Tunica, Mississippi, a small town that serves as the surprising home to a series of bustling casinos. Although severe poverty permeated the region in the '80s, Tunica experienced a reversal of fortune in 1992 when it opened the first casino in the unincorporated village of Tunica Resorts. Today, nearly 10 casinos sit upon the banks of the Mississippi, providing more than 6,000 hotel rooms to visitors, including some establishments that have received particularly high praise from local publications.
In 2013, Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino Tunica was named the best overall casino in Tunica by Southern Gaming and Destinations Magazine. The resort also earned top honors in the best entertainment category with Roxy’s Live, a small lounge with intimate musical performances, and River Palace Entertainment Center, a 1,600-seat theater used for major concerts. Book a room in one of the lavish suites outfitted with kitchenettes and whirlpool tubs or camp out in one of 62 RV spots outfitted with full hookups. The hotel does not permit pets but there’s a doggy hotel just 10 minutes away. Soak up the great outdoors and explore the grounds lined with a babbling brook, waterfall and wooden bridge, all just steps from the sprawling outdoor pool. Try your luck on the two-story casino dotted with more than 1,200 slot machines and 30 gaming tables.
